Terms of use

The agreement between you and SATS LION Ltd when you use our app and website. Plain, fair, and written for parents and schools.

Last updated: June 2026.

These terms of use (the "terms") explain how you may use SATS LION, a game-first revision app that turns Key Stage 2 spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) into a daily ten-minute quest, with Leo the Lion as the coach. SATS LION is provided by SATS LION Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales ("we", "us", "our"). Throughout, "the service" means our mobile apps, our website at satslion.com, and any related features we make available.

We have tried to keep these terms short and readable. They sit alongside our privacy notice, which explains how we handle personal data, and which forms part of your agreement with us. If anything here is unclear, please email hello@satslion.com and we will do our best to help.

1. These terms and acceptance

By creating an account, starting a free trial, taking out a subscription, or otherwise using the service, you confirm that you accept these terms and agree to follow them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

These terms, together with our privacy notice and any order or pricing details shown when you sign up, make up the whole agreement between you and us. We may publish additional rules or guidance for specific features (for example, a schools dashboard); where we do, those rules form part of these terms. If there is any conflict, the most specific terms for the feature you are using will apply.

2. Who can use SATS LION

SATS LION is designed for children in Year 6 working towards their Key Stage 2 SATS, but the people who hold accounts and agree to these terms are adults, not children.

  • Parents and guardians (B2C). If you are a parent or guardian, you must be at least 18 years old to open an account. You set up the account, you agree to these terms, and you decide whether your child uses the service. A child's learner profile carries no more than a first name and a year group; the contactable account always belongs to you, the adult.
  • Schools (B2B). If you are a school, multi-academy trust, or other education provider, the member of staff who sets up the account confirms that they are authorised to act for the school and to accept these terms on its behalf. The school is responsible for deciding, on a lawful basis, that its pupils may use the service, for any notices to parents that its own policies require, and for managing the learner profiles it creates.

Children do not create their own accounts and are not asked to enter contact details. We build the service to be data-minimal and in line with the UK Children's Code (the Age Appropriate Design Code): we do not show adverts, we do not sell data, and we do not profile children for marketing.

3. Accounts and your responsibilities

To use most of the service you will need an adult account. You agree to provide accurate information when you register and to keep it up to date. You are responsible for keeping your login details confidential and for any activity that happens under your account.

  • Choose a strong password and do not share it with others.
  • Tell us promptly at hello@satslion.com if you think your account has been accessed without your permission.
  • If you are a parent, you are responsible for supervising your child's use of the service as you think appropriate for their age.
  • If you are a school, you are responsible for managing staff access, for the learner profiles you create or remove, and for handling your own pupil and parent communications.

You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account if these terms are seriously or repeatedly broken, if we are required to by law, or if keeping it open would put other users or the service at risk. Where it is reasonable and lawful to do so, we will give you notice first.

4. Subscriptions, free trials, billing, cancellation and refunds

Some features are free and others are part of a paid subscription. The price, billing period and what is included are shown clearly before you commit, and we will never charge you without making the cost plain first. Prices include VAT where it applies.

  • Free trials. If we offer a free trial, we will tell you how long it lasts and what happens when it ends. If a trial rolls into a paid plan, we will make that clear at sign-up so there are no surprises.
  • Recurring billing. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period (for example monthly or annually) until you cancel. Payments may be handled by a third-party payment provider or by the relevant app store, and that provider's own terms may also apply.
  • Cancellation. You can cancel at any time, and we keep cancelling simple. When you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for, and it will not renew after that. If you subscribed through an app store, you may need to cancel through that store's subscription settings.
  • Refunds and your statutory rights. We aim to be fair. Nothing in these terms affects the consumer rights you have under the law of England and Wales, including any right to a refund within a cooling-off period for consumers. If something has gone wrong with a payment, contact hello@satslion.com and we will look into it promptly. Where a purchase was made through an app store, refunds may be handled under that store's policy.
  • Price changes. We may change our prices from time to time. Any change to the price of an existing subscription will be notified to you in advance and will take effect from your next billing period, so you can decide whether to continue.

5. Acceptable use

The service is here to help children learn, and we ask everyone to use it in that spirit. When using SATS LION you agree that you will not:

  • break any applicable law, or use the service for anything unlawful, harmful or fraudulent;
  • attempt to access accounts, data or areas of the service that are not yours;
  • copy, scrape, resell, or commercially exploit our content or the service without our written permission;
  • try to interfere with, disrupt, reverse engineer, or place an unreasonable load on the service or its security;
  • upload anything that contains malware, or that is offensive, misleading or infringes someone else's rights;
  • misrepresent who you are, or use the service in a way that could harm a child or another user.

If you come across content or behaviour that worries you, please report it to hello@satslion.com so we can act.

6. Our content and intellectual property

The service, including the SATS LION name, the Leo the Lion character, the artwork, the questions, the software and the overall look and feel, is owned by SATS LION Ltd or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. Our learning content is aligned to the Key Stage 2 statutory framework and is human-reviewed.

We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence to use the service for its intended purpose: a parent for their household, and a school for the education of its own pupils. This licence does not let you copy, distribute, publish or resell our content beyond that ordinary use. All rights we do not expressly grant are reserved. Trademarks and brand names of third parties (such as app stores) belong to their respective owners.

7. Service availability and exam outcomes

We work hard to keep the service running smoothly and to make it available on the web (so schools can use it on Chromebooks with no install) as well as on mobile. Even so, we cannot promise that the service will always be available or completely free of faults. We may sometimes need to suspend or limit parts of the service for maintenance, updates or reasons beyond our reasonable control, and we may add, change or remove features as the product develops.

SATS LION is a revision and practice tool designed to support a child's learning. It is not a guarantee of any particular result. We cannot and do not promise any specific mark, grade, scaled score or outcome in the Key Stage 2 SATS or any other assessment. How a child performs depends on many factors outside our control, including their own effort and the support around them.

8. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. In particular, we do not exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited under the law of England and Wales. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Subject to that, and as far as the law allows, we are not liable for losses that are not a reasonably foreseeable result of our breach, or for loss that is not connected to your use of the service. We provide the free parts of the service on an "as is" basis. The service is intended for personal and educational use, and we are not liable for any business losses, such as loss of profit or revenue, that you may suffer.

Where we are liable to you, our total liability arising out of or in connection with these terms will not, as far as the law allows, exceed the greater of the amount you paid us for the service in the twelve months before the claim arose, or twenty pounds.

9. Governing law

These terms, and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them or your use of the service, are governed by the laws of England and Wales. You and we agree that the courts of England and Wales will have jurisdiction, although if you live in another part of the United Kingdom you may also be able to bring proceedings in your local courts.

10. Changes to these terms and how to contact us

We may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the service, to our pricing, or to the law. When we make a significant change, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where it is reasonable to do so, give you notice through the app or by email. By continuing to use the service after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms.
