Privacy policy
How we handle your information, written plainly. We are data-minimal by design and built to the UK Children's Code: a learner profile holds no more than a first name and year group, and an adult always holds the account.
Last updated: June 2026.
This policy explains what personal information SATS LION collects, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over it. It applies to our website, our apps for iOS, Android and the web, and any related services. We have written it to be readable by parents, carers, teachers and pupils alike, and we have kept the data we handle to the minimum needed to run a safe, useful learning product.
1. Who we are
SATS LION is a product of SATS LION Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. SATS LION Ltd is the data controller responsible for the personal information described in this policy, which means we decide how and why it is processed.
If you have any question about this policy or about how we handle your data, you can reach our data team at privacy@satslion.com. For general enquiries you can use hello@satslion.com, and schools can contact us at schools@satslion.com.
2. The information we collect
We collect only what we need to provide the service. In practice this falls into a few clear categories.
- Account holder details. An account is always held by an adult: a parent or carer for home use, or a member of staff for a school. To create and secure that account we collect a name and an email address, and we store the fact that you set a password (we never store the password itself in a readable form).
- Learner profile details. A learner profile is deliberately minimal. It carries no more than a first name (or a nickname you choose) and a year group. We do not ask for a learner's surname, date of birth, address, photograph or contact details.
- Learning and progress data. As a child practises spelling, punctuation and grammar, we record their answers, scores, streaks and the skills they are working on. This is what lets the app set the right next question, show progress, and let an account holder see how things are going.
- Payment information. If you subscribe, your card details are handled by our payment provider, not by us. We receive only a confirmation that a payment succeeded and the limited billing details we need to manage your subscription and meet our accounting duties.
- Minimal technical data. To keep the service working and secure we process basic technical information such as device and browser type, app version, approximate region inferred from your network, and error logs. We use privacy-first measures and we do not use advertising trackers or third-party ad SDKs.
3. How and why we use it
We use personal information to run SATS LION, to keep it safe and reliable, and to improve it. UK and EU data protection law requires us to have a lawful basis for each use. Ours are as follows.
- To perform our contract with you. Creating and maintaining your account, setting up learner profiles, delivering practice quests, tracking progress and processing your subscription are all needed to provide the service you have signed up for.
- With your consent. Where we rely on consent, for example for any optional communications or non-essential cookies, we ask for it clearly and you can withdraw it at any time without affecting your use of the core product.
- For our legitimate interests. We have a legitimate interest in keeping the service secure, preventing misuse, fixing faults, understanding in aggregate which features help children learn, and improving the product. We balance these interests against your rights, and we never use a legitimate-interests basis to profile or advertise to children.
We may also process limited information where we have a legal obligation to do so, for example to keep proper financial records or to respond to a lawful request from an authority.
4. Children's privacy
SATS LION is made for primary-age children, so protecting them is at the centre of how we have built it. We follow the UK Children's Code (the Age Appropriate Design Code) and apply the standard of the child's best interests throughout.
- An account is always created, held and managed by a responsible adult. That adult sets up each learner profile and consents to the processing of the child's information on the child's behalf.
- A learner profile is data-minimal: a first name and a year group only. Children are not asked to provide contact details, and they cannot be contacted by us directly.
- We do not profile children for marketing, we do not show advertising to children, and we do not use children's data to build behavioural advertising audiences.
- Default settings are designed to be high-privacy. Learning content is curriculum-aligned to the KS2 statutory framework and is human-reviewed before it reaches a child.
If you believe a child has provided us with information without the involvement of a responsible adult, please contact privacy@satslion.com and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
5. Sharing and processors
We do not sell personal data, and we never trade it for advertising. We share information only in the limited circumstances set out here.
- Service providers (processors). We use a small number of trusted suppliers to run the service, such as cloud hosting and database providers, our payment provider, and tools for transactional email and error monitoring. They act only on our instructions, under contracts that require them to protect your data and use it solely to provide their service to us.
- Within a school. Where a school holds the account, relevant staff at that school can see the learning data of the pupils in their care, in line with the school's own duties as a controller.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and our service.
We host data in the UK or the EU where possible. If any processor needs to transfer data outside the UK or EEA, we put appropriate safeguards in place, such as approved standard contractual clauses, so that your information remains protected.
6. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it. Account and learner data is retained while the account is active so that progress is preserved. If an account is closed, or a learner profile is deleted, we delete or anonymise the associated data within a reasonable period, except where we must keep limited records for longer to meet a legal obligation (for example, financial records for tax purposes).
Where a school holds the account, retention is also guided by the school's own data retention arrangements. You can ask us to delete your data sooner using the rights described below.
7. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have a number of rights over your personal information. Subject to certain conditions, these include:
- Access: the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: the right to have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected.
- Erasure: the right to ask us to delete your data in certain circumstances.
- Portability: the right to receive certain data in a structured, commonly used format, or to have it transferred to another provider where technically feasible.
- Objection and restriction: the right to object to, or ask us to restrict, certain processing, including any processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Withdrawing consent: the right to withdraw any consent you have given, at any time.
An adult account holder can exercise these rights on behalf of the learner profiles they manage. To make a request, email privacy@satslion.com. We will respond within the time limits set by law and we will not charge a fee for a routine request.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk. We would, however, welcome the chance to address your concerns first.
8. Cookies
We use a small set of cookies and similar technologies, focused on keeping you signed in and the service running, together with privacy-first measurement. We do not use advertising cookies. For full detail on the cookies we use and how to manage them, please see our cookie policy.
9. Changes and how to contact us
We may update this policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the product or to the law. When we make a material change we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let account holders know. Please check back from time to time so you are aware of any updates.
If you have any questions, concerns or requests about this policy or your personal data, please contact our data team at privacy@satslion.com. You can also write to us at SATS LION Ltd, England and Wales.
